Lipstick on a Pig

If you watch these two videos, you will see how both McCain and Obama have used the phrase, "lipstick on a pig" in describing an oponent. The McCain camp calls Obama's use sexist and a smear of Palin; yet it seems to me that Obama is clearly talking about McCain's policy here. However, McCain's use of it seems to be much more of a chauvinistic slam on Hilary Clinton. I know that I watch these videos with biased eyes and ears...but seriously, do you see them differently?

Hey Erika. I agree. Obama would have to be an idiot to have been referring to Palin. He isn't that dumb. What stood out to me was the fact that the crowd started to holler and laugh after Obama said "you can put lipstick on a pig..." There is nothing inherently funny about such a statement. I don't know why they would laugh unless they thought he was referring to Palin. Either way, i think people should give him the benefit of the doubt on this one!

Hey, Roger. Thanks for the comment and for your openness to engage in some bipartisan dialogue! Wooh!

Interesting point about the crowd. I honestly had not noticed that before. Do you think that McCain's reception was any different?

After reviewing the video, my interpretation is slightly different: Obama's thesis, if you will, was that, "even though McCain says he is about change, his actions and policy's would suggest otherwise". The crowd agrees with Obama, and so they eat it up when he quotes the semi-popular "lipstick" expression.
(In case you hadn't heard the expression before, here is an article about it: http://www.slate.com/id/2199805/?from=rss). Looking forward to hearing more from you.

The week before he made this forty million people heard Sarah Palin say that the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom was lipstick. Obama's timing was poor and, at bare minimum, his insensitivity was exhibited in this particular episode.

Consider these options:

1) Obama did not have Gov. Palin in mind when he made the remark, meaning that either:
a) He was not aware of her acceptance speech joke, suggesting a certain level of density.
b) He was aware of her joke and did not care if his comment was taken wrongly. This is reckless and stupid.

or

2) He did have Palin in mind when he made the remark, meaning that an insult was intended.

I don't know what any other options there are. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he wasn't referring to her.

Hey Erika!
You are brave to start a political blog in these times. I have to say I find myself turning away from it. Mostly because it is hard to even talk about political points of views with most people. It is often not a conversation but bashing the other opinion..
It is interesting and shocking coming from 'down to earth' holland into this election hype.
